Hikers wheel their way through Mugu's Sycamore Canyon

Hiking five miles on a dirt road in a wheelchair isn’t easy, which is why 150 people showed up to help Saturday as the twice-a-year Wheels to the Sea event took place in Sycamore Canyon, part of Point Mugu State Park.

Dozens of people showed up Saturday to help 34 wheelchair-users hike five miles of dirt road in Sycamore Canyon during the twice-yearly Wheels to the Sea event.

A barbecue was held on the beach afterward.

Ciana Grove, who coordinates the event for Wilderness Institute — one of several organizations that helps put on Wheels to the Sea — said 34 wheelchair-users and dozens of helpers made their way to the beach after being dropped off at Danielson Ranch in the park. From there, it’s five miles to the Pacific Coast Highway, where California Highway Patrol officers closed the road in both directions for about five minutes as the group crossed over to the beach en masse. There, the Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks hosted a barbecue.

Grove said the hike began about 11 a.m. after a brunch at Danielson, and the beach barbecue began around 3 p.m.

“The weather was perfect,” she said. “It was in the 70s, with a gentle breeze, and the water was really nice.”

Other sponsors include Kiwanis clubs in Chatsworth, Northridge, Canoga Park and Woodland Hills; the Wilderness Institute; the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority; the Volunteer Mountain Bike Unit and California State Parks.
